Doing both Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure in one day is the most demanding day at Universal Orlando, but it’s a reasonable plan if you arrive at rope drop, take Hogwarts Express between the parks, and accept that you’ll have to skip a handful of rides. A Park-to-Park ticket and an Express Pass are the two prerequisites that make it work. Without both you’ll spend the day in queues and miss at least one headliner per park.

This guide covers the strategic decisions (which park to start at, when to use the Express Pass, when to take Hogwarts Express) plus a full chronological plan for the day. The headline ride count if you execute it cleanly is around 12 to 14 attractions across the two parks, plus dinner and the evening shows.

Methodology: I’ve been visiting Universal Orlando as an annual passholder since 2018 and was most recently at both parks in May 2026 on a press trip with the Universal Orlando PR team. This plan reflects the post-Rip-Ride-Rockit USF layout, the 2026 Jurassic Park River Adventure and Pteranodon Flyers refurbishments at Islands of Adventure, and the current Hogwarts Express schedule.

Day Overview

Yes, it’s possible to do both Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure in one day. It’s harder than picking either park on its own, but with the right ticket and a disciplined plan you can comfortably ride the headliners at both. The reason this works is that Universal Studios Florida is heavily indoor-ride-focused with short morning queues, and Islands of Adventure’s outdoor coasters have a noticeable post-lunch lull that lines up neatly with your arrival from the other park.

Three prerequisites make the difference between a great day and a frustrating one:

  • A Park-to-Park ticket. A single-park ticket only gets you into one park, and the Hogwarts Express ride from Universal Studios Florida to Islands of Adventure (and vice versa) requires Park-to-Park access. There’s no exception or workaround.
  • Express Pass. Without it you’ll only get through about half the headliners you’d otherwise tick off. Express Unlimited is the version worth the upgrade because it covers re-rides as well as first rides.
  • Rope drop, no matter which park you start at. The first hour of the day at either park is when you can clear two or three headliners in the time it’d take to do one after 11am.

Which park should you start at?

The standard default is to start at Universal Studios Florida. The rope drop strategy works because almost every headliner is indoor, the queues fill up later, and you can finish the morning around lunchtime and take Hogwarts Express over to Islands of Adventure for the afternoon coasters and Hogsmeade.

If you’re staying on-site with Early Park Admission, start at Islands of Adventure instead. Hogsmeade and VelociCoaster typically open during Early Park Admission, so you can rope drop both Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and Jurassic World VelociCoaster before the public is in. Once the gates open to general admission, take Hogwarts Express over to Universal Studios Florida and pick up the standard morning playbook there in the afternoon instead.

This guide is written as a Universal-Studios-first day because that’s the default for visitors without Early Park Admission. If you’re starting at Islands of Adventure, swap the Morning and Afternoon chapters mentally. The chronological timing stays the same.

Morning at Universal Studios Florida (8:40am – 12:00pm)

Aim to arrive at the Universal Studios Florida entrance 20 minutes before opening. If you’re driving, you’ll need to walk from the parking garage, pass security, and walk through CityWalk, which takes at least 20 minutes. Eat breakfast before you arrive. The first hour is too valuable to waste queuing for food.

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, which used to be the obvious rope drop pick at Universal Studios Florida, closed permanently on 17 August 2025. The new rope drop strategy is to head straight to Diagon Alley for Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, then loop back through the front of the park for the indoor headliners.

Pro Tip: Don’t waste your Express Pass on Gringotts at rope drop. The queue is short enough first thing that you’ll save the pass for MEN IN BLACK, The Simpsons, and Race Through New York later in the morning, where the wait spikes are much steeper.

After Gringotts, work the front half of the park. Revenge of the Mummy and Transformers: The Ride 3D are both indoor headliners with short morning queues; you can do both back-to-back before 10:30am if you move at pace. From there it’s a quick walk to MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack and The Simpsons Ride in Springfield. While you’re at Simpsons, Kang & Kodos’ Twirl ‘n’ Hurl next door is a quick walk-on most mornings.

If you have time, close out the morning with Despicable Me Minion Mayhem and Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon. Both have the steepest wait spikes between 11am and 2pm, so use your Express Pass here if you’ve got it. By 12:00pm you should be heading back toward Diagon Alley for Hogwarts Express.

If you’re tight on time, the rides to drop are E.T. Adventure (slow-loading, longer queue) and DreamWorks Land (worth a half-hour if you’re with younger children, skip if not).

Hogwarts Express + Lunch (12:00pm – 1:30pm)

Hogwarts Express runs from King’s Cross Station in Diagon Alley to Hogsmeade Station in Islands of Adventure. It’s an attraction in its own right with a fully themed cabin experience, scenes outside the window, and shadows of Harry, Ron, and Hermione passing the corridor. The crossing takes around 4 minutes, but the queue plus journey usually runs 25 to 40 minutes depending on the day. Crucially, it still only runs between Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, not Epic Universe.

Lunch is the obvious next move once you arrive in Hogsmeade. Some of my favourite places to eat at Universal Orlando include:

  • Three Broomsticks (Hogsmeade, themed British comfort food, expect a queue)
  • Mythos Restaurant (Lost Continent, sit-down with table service)
  • Confisco Grille (Port of Entry, table-service American)
  • Thunder Falls Terrace (Jurassic Park, quick service with covered seating)
  • Fire Eater’s Grill (Lost Continent, quick service with shaded seating)

Pro Tip: Universal has announced that Lost Continent is entering phased closure, with Mythos Restaurant set to permanently close in 2027 as part of the land’s redevelopment. If you’ve always wanted to eat at Mythos, treat this as the trip to do it.

Afternoon at Islands of Adventure (1:30pm – 5:00pm)

The afternoon at Islands of Adventure is when you tick off the big outdoor coasters and the Wizarding World rides. Jurassic World VelociCoaster, Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, and The Incredible Hulk Coaster are the three you absolutely want to hit, and your Express Pass will save you the most time on these. Save Single Rider lines for the rides where you’ve got Express Pass already used or where the standby queue is over 60 minutes.

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey through Hogwarts Castle is the other unmissable ride. The queue is partly the attraction here, so don’t use Express Pass on this one unless the posted time is over 75 minutes. The portrait gallery and Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom are walked through, not stood still in.

2026 closure callout: Jurassic Park River Adventure is closed for refurbishment from 5 January through 19 November 2026, and Pteranodon Flyers is closed through early July 2026. Neither factors into a 2026 day plan, so don’t budget time for them.

If you’ve got time after the headliners, Skull Island: Reign of Kong is the next priority, though Kong has been chronically unreliable in 2026 with frequent same-day closures so don’t count on it. Doctor Doom’s Fearfall, The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, and The Cat in the Hat round out the afternoon if you’re moving quickly. Younger children get more out of Seuss Landing than older kids and adults.

Pro Tip: Hogsmeade after Forbidden Journey is the right time to grab a Butterbeer and explore the shop interiors. Honeydukes, Ollivanders, and Filch’s Emporium of Confiscated Goods all reward 5 to 10 minutes each, and you’ve earned the break by mid-afternoon.

Evening Strategy (5:00pm onwards)

The evening choice depends on what’s running on your visit date and whether you’ve still got the energy for a fourth park-to-park hop. The three main options are dinner at CityWalk plus the evening show at one of the two parks, dinner inside Islands of Adventure with the Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle, or call it a day after Hogsmeade and head back to your hotel.

Standard summer (April to late August)

Take Hogwarts Express back to Universal Studios Florida and aim for dinner at CityWalk around 6:30pm, then re-enter Universal Studios Florida for CineSational: A Symphonic Spectacular at 9pm. CineSational doesn’t run every night, so check the Universal Orlando app on the morning of your visit. The summer Mega Movie Parade steps off at 7pm most dates and is also worth catching if you’re between dinner and the show.

Halloween Horror Nights (late August to early November)

Universal Studios Florida closes early for daytime guests on Halloween Horror Nights event nights. The hard exit is 5pm. If you’re visiting between 28 August and 1 November 2026 and don’t have a Halloween Horror Nights ticket, finish the afternoon at Islands of Adventure (which stays open later) and head to CityWalk for dinner. Islands of Adventure runs the Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle through this period, so there’s still a closing show option.

Holiday season (mid-November to end of December)

Universal’s Holiday Parade runs nightly from 22 November through 31 December 2026 at Universal Studios Florida with a step-off time of 5pm or 5:30pm. Over at Islands of Adventure, the Magical Christmas Celebration in Hogsmeade runs after dark and is one of the better nighttime experiences in the resort. You can comfortably do both with Hogwarts Express, but the parade is timed and the Hogsmeade show is rolling, so do the parade first.

Pro Tip: The Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle is a 5-minute projection show that runs every 20 minutes from dusk to park close in summer. Aim to be at Hogwarts Castle at least 20 minutes before the show you want to see, because the central viewing spots fill quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions readers ask me about doing both Universal parks in one day.

Can you really do Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure in one day?

Yes, with a Park-to-Park ticket, an Express Pass, and a rope-drop arrival. You’ll need to skip a handful of rides at each park and accept that you won’t re-ride favourites, but you can comfortably tick off 12 to 14 headline attractions plus dinner and an evening show.

Do I need a Park-to-Park ticket to do both Universal parks in one day?

Yes. A single-park ticket only admits you to one park on a given day, and the Hogwarts Express ride between the two parks requires Park-to-Park access. There’s no workaround. The price uplift from single-park to Park-to-Park is around $60 per ticket in 2026 before tax.

Which park should I start at on a one-day two-park visit?

Universal Studios Florida if you don’t have Early Park Admission. Islands of Adventure if you do. Hogsmeade and Jurassic World VelociCoaster typically open during Early Park Admission, so on-site hotel guests can rope drop both Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and VelociCoaster before the public is in.

Is Express Pass worth it for a one-day two-park visit?

Yes, for almost everyone. Without Express Pass you’ll typically clear half the rides you’d otherwise get through in a day. Express Unlimited is the version worth the upgrade because it covers re-rides as well as first rides, which makes the difference at Islands of Adventure where the headline coasters genuinely warrant a second go.

Which rides should I rope-drop first at each park?

At Universal Studios Florida, head straight to Diagon Alley for Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts. At Islands of Adventure with Early Park Admission, rope drop Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure first, then Jurassic World VelociCoaster. Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, which used to be the obvious rope drop pick at Universal Studios Florida, closed permanently on 17 August 2025.

Should I add Epic Universe if I only have one day?

No. Epic Universe is a full day in its own right and isn’t reachable via Hogwarts Express. If you’ve got a 3-Day Park-to-Park ticket or longer in 2026 it includes Epic Universe on the same ticket, so plan it as a separate day rather than trying to fold it into a Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure one-day plan.

What time should I take Hogwarts Express to the other park?

Around 12:00pm if you’re starting at Universal Studios Florida. You’ll have time for lunch in Hogsmeade and the afternoon headliners at Islands of Adventure. If you’re starting at Islands of Adventure with Early Park Admission, take Hogwarts Express around 1:00pm to give Universal Studios Florida’s morning crowds time to thin.
