Planning a trip to Universal Orlando can be exciting, but knowing when to go can make a real difference to crowds, weather, and the price you pay.
The short answer is that the best months to visit Universal Orlando in 2026 and 2027 are mid-January after the first week, late April to early May, September, and the first half of November. The worst stretches are Thanksgiving week, the Christmas-to-New-Year window, and mid-June through early August.

Best Time to Visit Universal Orlando in 2026 and 2027 at a Glance
If you only have time for one summary, here it is. The four windows below balance low crowds, manageable weather, and reasonable prices for 2026 trips.
- 5 to 16 January 2026. Post-holiday slump and mild weather. This stretch has now passed for 2026; the 2027 equivalent is the first three weeks of January 2027.
- 27 April to 14 May 2026. After Easter and before the US summer rush. Daytime highs in the mid-80s. UK May half-term (25 to 29 May) sits at the tail of this window. The 2027 equivalent is roughly 12 April to 28 May 2027 (Easter 2027 ends 9 April).
- 1 to 30 September 2026. The lowest-crowd month of the year. Hurricane risk is real but the NOAA 2026 outlook is for a below-normal season. September 2027 follows the same pattern; check the NOAA 2027 outlook nearer the time.
- 2 to 19 November 2026. Mild weather, low crowds before Thanksgiving, and the Holidays at Universal overlay starts 14 November. The 2027 equivalent is 1 to 23 November 2027 (Thanksgiving falls 25 November 2027).

How Many Days and How Far Ahead to Plan
Universal Orlando is built around multi-day visits, and the right length depends on which parks you want to do.
- 3 days is the minimum if you skip Epic Universe and stick to Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.
- 4 to 5 days is the standard recommendation now that Epic Universe is open. That gives you a full day at each of the three theme parks plus a day to repeat favourites or rope-drop the headliner you missed.
- 6 to 7 days gives you a Volcano Bay day, time to rest, and time to revisit anything you loved.
Universal typically opens hotel reservations 18 months ahead. Book on-site hotels 4 to 6 months out for the best value. For September deals or peak holiday dates, book 8 to 12 months in advance.

Month-by-Month Crowd, Weather, and Event Breakdown
Here is a quick-reference table for the full year. Crowd levels are based on 12-month wait-time averages weighted to 2026 conditions. Weather comes from NWS Melbourne climate normals.
For context:
- Low = under 30 minutes on most rides
- Moderate = 30 to 60 minutes on most rides
- High = 90 minutes plus rides
Weather can also rewrite the evening. On Saturday 23 May 2026 a 9pm thunderstorm at Universal Studios Florida cancelled the premier of the drone show at the CineSational: A Symphonic Spectacular. Outside hurricane season proper, Florida’s afternoon and evening thunderstorm pattern can still close outdoor entertainment with little notice.
| Month | Crowd level | Avg high | Notable events |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | Low after first week | 71°F | Rock the Universe (late Jan) |
| February | Moderate | 73°F | Mardi Gras opens early Feb |
| March | High (US Spring Break) | 78°F | Mardi Gras continues |
| April | High through Easter, then low | 83°F | Mardi Gras to early April; UK Easter holidays |
| May | Low until Memorial Day weekend | 88°F | UK May half-term overlap (25 to 29 May) |
| June | High (US summer + hurricane season opens 1 June) | 91°F | Hurricane season begins |
| July | Very high | 92°F | July 4 peak; UK summer holidays begin 24 Jul |
| August | High in first half, easing by late month | 92°F | HHN starts 28 August |
| September | Lowest of the year | 90°F | HHN continues; cheapest hotel rates |
| October | HHN evenings busy; days lighter | 85°F | UK Oct half-term 26 to 30 Oct |
| November | Low before Thanksgiving, high during | 78°F | Holidays at Universal starts 14 Nov; HHN ends 1 Nov |
| December | Low until 19 Dec, peak Christmas to New Year | 73°F | Holidays overlay; UK Christmas hols 21 Dec to 1 Jan |

I visited Universal Orlando from 21 to 24 May 2026, which overlapped the start of Memorial Day weekend (a US public holiday driving weekend visitors to Universal).
The longest wait I personally observed was Hagrid’s Motorcycle Adventure on Sunday 24 May at 9:30am at 110 minutes. However, the ride had been down all morning during Early Park Admission.

At the same time on the same day, the Incredible Hulk Coaster ran a 10-minute wait (I boarded at 9:10am), Storm Force Accelatron in Marvel Super Hero Island was a 5-minute wait at 9:30am, and Cat in the Hat in Seuss Landing was 10 minutes at 9:45am.
Mondays and Tuesdays are typically the quietest across all three theme parks. Saturdays and Sundays draw the heaviest crowds, especially at Epic Universe where weekend visitors target the newest park.

Worst Times to Visit Universal Orlando
Four stretches dominate the avoid list, and the reasoning is the same for each. School holidays overlap with peak demand, hotel rates spike, and queue averages roughly double.
- Thanksgiving week (23 to 27 November 2026). Most US schools close Wednesday to Friday. Florida districts often take the full week. Crowds peak Wednesday through Saturday.
- Christmas to New Year (21 December 2026 to 1 January 2027). The single busiest stretch of the year. Battle at the Ministry frequently breaks 180 minutes. Hotel rates roughly double. Epic Universe’s all-time busiest day on record was 3 January 2026 (the tail of last year’s holiday peak) at 107 minute average waits with peaks above 300 minutes.
- US Spring Break (mid-March to mid-April). A rolling peak as different school districts stagger their breaks. Florida districts often take Palm Beach County’s pattern of 22 to 26 March 2027.
- Mid-June through early August. US summer holidays plus UK summer holidays starting 24 July 2026 give a sustained 6 to 8 week peak. Temperatures sit in the low 90s with daily afternoon thunderstorms.
For 2027 trips, the equivalent worst times are Thanksgiving week (24 to 28 November 2027), Christmas to New Year (20 December 2027 to 2 January 2028), US Spring Break (mid-March to mid-April 2027), and mid-June through early August 2027.

Hurricane Season, June to November
The Atlantic hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November 2026. Peak is mid-August through mid-October. NOAA’s May 2026 outlook is for a below-normal season with a 55 percent probability, helped by an expected El Niño.
Practically, this means September is the cheapest month to visit but also the one with the highest chance of trip disruption.

I learned this the hard way. A September Universal Orlando trip we had booked from the UK was cancelled before we left, when our flights were grounded ahead of an incoming hurricane. If September is your only window, book refundable hotel rates and flexible flight tickets.
Universal Orlando’s deals page currently advertises up to 35 percent off 7-plus-night stays through 3 September 2026 at all on-site hotels (Endless Summer, Sapphire Falls, Royal Pacific, Hard Rock, Portofino, and Helios Grand). Bundle hotel-plus-ticket packages typically deepen the discount further.

The 2027 Atlantic hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November 2027. NOAA does not publish 2027 outlooks until late May 2027, so book travel insurance for September 2027 trips assuming a normal season.
Best Times for UK Visitors and School Half-Term
UK school holidays overlap with US peak demand in ways that catch out first-time British visitors. The dates below use gov.uk term-time guidance, with the caveat that academies and individual schools can vary by a few days.
- February half-term (already past for 2026). Quiet at Universal but the weather is the coolest of the year with daytime highs around 73°F. Pack layers for early starts.
- Easter holidays (30 March to 10 April 2026). This window overlaps US Spring Break and is the second-busiest stretch of the spring. Avoid if you can choose Easter dates.
- May half-term (25 to 29 May 2026). The sweet spot for weather (warm but not yet humid) but the start of UK half-term overlaps Memorial Day weekend (US public holiday 25 May 2026), which I observed running busy across all parks. Volcano Bay in particular gets hammered. The midweek of UK half-term (27 to 29 May) eases as US Memorial Day visitors leave.
- Summer half-term (24 July to 31 August 2026). Peak crowds, peak heat, peak prices. Avoid unless you have to.
- October half-term (26 to 30 October 2026). This is the week before Halloween Horror Nights wraps. Days are quieter but evenings get busy because of HHN. Plan rides for mornings and have a non-USF activity ready for the evening.
- Christmas holidays (21 December 2026 to 1 January 2027). Holidays at Universal is at peak, but crowds are at their highest of the year. Worth it if you want the full festive overlay.
- 2027 UK half-term dates. February half-term 15 to 19 February 2027, Easter holidays 26 March to 9 April 2027, May half-term 31 May to 4 June 2027, summer holidays late July to early September 2027, October half-term the week of 25 October 2027 (confirmed by local authority). Academies vary by a few days.
UK visitors should note that booking through a UK travel agent can sometimes match or beat the on-site Universal Orlando deals, especially on 14-night packages.
Halloween Horror Nights and Holidays at Universal Overlay
Halloween Horror Nights 35 runs Friday 28 August to Sunday 1 November 2026 on 48 select nights. Universal Studios Florida closes at 5pm to day-guests on event nights. Islands of Adventure, Epic Universe, and Volcano Bay all keep regular hours.

Halloween Horror Nights is a separately-ticketed evening event with elaborate haunted houses, scare zones, and themed shows. It is not aimed at young children and admission is not included with regular day tickets.
I went to HHN in August 2023, at the very start of that year’s season. Early-season Friday and Sunday nights ran noticeably quieter than the late-October Saturday nights regular HHN-goers tell me about, with house waits sitting around 40 to 60 minutes rather than the 90-plus they hit in October.

If you want to do HHN as a UK visitor, the late-October half-term week works well. Buy HHN tickets in advance to lock in early-night pricing. Sunday nights are typically the lightest HHN attendance.
HHN 36 dates for 2027 have not been announced as of June 2026. Universal’s historical pattern points to late August through early November 2027 with select event nights, so UK visitors planning around October half-term 2027 (week of 25 October) should expect HHN to be running.
Holidays at Universal Orlando runs 14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. The overlay is included with regular park admission and runs alongside normal park hours. It adds festive decor, themed character experiences, and a parade across all three parks.
The overlay includes Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Grinchmas at Seuss Landing, and Universal’s Holiday Parade featuring Macy’s at Universal Studios Florida.
Frequently Asked Questions
These are the questions readers ask me most often about choosing the best month or week to visit Universal Orlando.
When is the best time to visit Universal Orlando in 2026 and 2027?
Mid-January, late April through mid-May, September, and the first half of November consistently give the lowest crowds. The deepest dip in 2026 has already passed (5 to 16 January). The next-best windows are 27 April to 14 May and 1 to 30 September. UK readers should note that September is the cheapest month but also the highest hurricane-risk month.
What is the cheapest month to visit Universal Orlando?
September has 18 of the 30 cheapest days of the year. Late August, January, and early November also offer good value. Universal’s current Deals page advertises up to 35 percent off 7-plus-night stays through 3 September 2026 at all on-site hotels.
What is the busiest time at Universal Orlando?
Christmas week through New Year’s Day, US Thanksgiving week, US Spring Break (mid-March to mid-April), and mid-June through early August. Halloween Horror Nights also makes USF evenings busier on event nights between 28 August and 1 November 2026, with USF closing to day-guests at 5pm on event nights.
Is September a good time to visit Universal Orlando?
Yes for crowds, with caveats. September is the lowest-crowd month and the cheapest for hotels. The trade-off is hurricane season (peak mid-August to mid-October). The NOAA 2026 outlook is for a below-normal season, but if you cannot afford trip disruption, mid-May or early November give similar crowds with lower weather risk.
When is the best time to visit Universal Orlando for UK visitors?
May half-term (25 to 29 May 2026) is the sweet spot for British families. The weather is warm but not humid, and US schools have not yet broken up. October half-term (26 to 30 October) also works for HHN visitors, with the caveat that USF closes early to day-guests on event nights. Avoid Easter holidays (30 March to 10 April 2026), which overlaps US Spring Break.
Should I avoid Universal Orlando during Halloween Horror Nights?
Not necessarily. HHN nights mean USF closes to day-guests at 5pm, but Islands of Adventure, Epic Universe, and Volcano Bay keep regular hours. Plan USF for mornings and split evenings between the other parks. Sunday nights are typically the lightest HHN attendance if you want to do the event itself.
