When visiting Universal Studios in storm season (June to November), you may experience the threat or reality of a hurricane. Universal Studios has closed due to a hurricane in the past. However, the decision to close the Universal Parks is never taken lightly.

Universal has a trained team dedicated to monitoring the weather. This team and management decide whether to close the park due to bad weather. They will aim to provide at least one day’s notice if the parks have to close due to a hurricane.

However, the exact procedure is determined on a case-by-case basis. Universal never wants to close the theme park. However, the decision is always made with health and safety being a priority.

Cancelling a Trip

Universal has a severe weather policy that helps guests reschedule or cancel their trip in the event of an impending hurricane.

The policy states that you may cancel or reschedule a:

  • Universal Parks & Resorts Vacations Package
  • Universal Orlando Resort Hotel Booking
  • Universal Orlando Park Tickets – Booked directly with Universal Orlando

You can do this without any cancellation or change fees. You can also change your booking because of the severe weather policy. To do so, call the Guest Contact Centre team at 877-801-9720.

Pro Tip: If you bought Universal Orlando tickets from a third party, check their terms. Alternatively, you may need to call your travel insurance provider to make a claim.

If a hurricane is due to make landfall on your Universal Orlando vacation, you will have to decide if you should:

  • Continue with your vacation (if possible)
  • Cancel your vacation
  • Reschedule your vacation

Depending on how you’ve booked, this decision might not always be in your control. For example, in 2019, the tour operator cancelled my trip from the UK to Universal Orlando due to an impending hurricane. I couldn’t have gone, even if I wanted to.

Based on my experience, here’s some things I suggest thinking about before making your decision:

  • How Soon the Trip is: A hurricane’s strength and route can change significantly as it approaches Florida.
  • Cancelled & Rescheduled Flights: Getting in and out of Florida before or after a hurricane can be difficult.
  • Closed Rides: While the Universal theme parks may remain open, rides within the park may be closed due to the weather.
  • Health & Safety: Hurricanes can be deadly. When travelling in severe weather conditions, you’ll want to consider your family’s health and safety.
  • Vacation Duration: If your Universal vacation is only a few days, the hurricane might affect all of it. However, if you’re going for two weeks, it might only affect a small portion.

Universal Orlando Hotels

If you’re staying at a Universal Orlando hotel during a hurricane, staff will inform you of the hotel’s procedure. This notification will be made with a letter under your door and/or email.

Hotel staff will then inform you of any changes as the hurricane approaches. This is usually done over multiple days, giving you ample time to prepare or change your plans.

During an active hurricane, you will need to remain inside the hotel. At this time, Universal tries to provide extra activities where possible, including:

  • Movies
  • Games
  • Character Interactions

You will be asked to return to your room if the weather worsens. Meanwhile, you will be asked to gather in an ample enclosed space without windows in an emergency.

Each hotel at the Universal Orlando Resort has a slightly different procedure in a hurricane. As such, it’s essential that you read all the information you are given.

Before & After a Hurricane

Universal Orlando will continue to open and operate before and after a hurricane, wherever it is safe to do so. However, not all rides and attractions inside the theme park may be in operation.

Universal Orlando rides that close due to lightning are often not in operation due to health and safety concerns. These ride closures typically increase standby wait times for the remaining operational rides.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about visiting Universal Orlando during hurricane season, and what happens if a storm hits, are below.

Does Universal Orlando close for hurricanes?

Yes, when a hurricane or tropical storm warning is issued for Central Florida. The most recent multi-day closure was Hurricane Milton in October 2024, and Universal usually announces closures with at least one day’s notice. Parks reopen as soon as it’s safe, often the day after the storm passes.

When is hurricane season at Universal Orlando?

June 1 through November 30 is the official Atlantic hurricane season, with peak activity from August through October and September the statistically most active month. Storms close enough to affect Orlando happen roughly once or twice per season on average, with full park closures rare.

Does Universal Orlando refund tickets during a hurricane?

Yes, under specific conditions. Universal’s severe weather policy waives change and cancellation fees on vacation packages, hotel bookings, and park tickets booked directly when a hurricane or tropical storm warning is issued, or a state of emergency is declared, within seven days of your arrival. The policy does not apply to bookings made after the warning is issued, to airline tickets, or to group bookings.

What happens if I’m staying at a Universal hotel during a hurricane?

Hotel staff will deliver a letter under your door and send an email outlining the procedure for that property, plus push notifications via the Universal Orlando app. During an active hurricane you shelter in place inside the hotel, with movies, games, and character interactions laid on. Each property has slightly different sheltering instructions based on building layout.

Should I buy travel insurance for Universal Orlando during hurricane season?

Yes, especially for trips from August through October. Universal’s severe weather policy covers direct bookings but not airline tickets, and many policies require purchase within 14 days of your first trip deposit to unlock pre-existing-condition and trip-cancellation waivers. Travel insurance fills the gaps Universal’s policy doesn’t cover.

Do rides stay open at Universal Orlando during storms?

Indoor rides usually stay open, but outdoor rides and Volcano Bay close for lightning detected within roughly a 10-mile radius (5 miles for Volcano Bay). Indoor headliners like Forbidden Journey, Gringotts, Mummy, Spider-Man, Mario Kart Bowser’s Challenge, Monsters Unchained, and Battle at the Ministry are the indoor backstops when outdoor coasters shut down.
