Universal Orlando now has three theme parks, but Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure are the two originals. If you’re trying to prioritise one over the other for a short trip, which park should you visit?
For most visitors, the split comes down to five things:
- Best for thrill-seekers: Islands of Adventure. Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure, VelociCoaster, Hulk Coaster.
- Best for kids under 8: Universal Studios Florida. DreamWorks Land, Illumination’s Minion Land.
- Best for Harry Potter fans: Islands of Adventure. Hogsmeade has more space than Diagon Alley.
- Best for shows and character meets: Universal Studios Florida.
- Best if you only have one day: Islands of Adventure.
If you’re forced to pick one, Islands of Adventure has more rides, but Universal Studios Florida is great for entertainment and family appeal.
Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure are located next to each other, connected by CityWalk and the Hogwarts Express. However, you’ll need a Park-to-Park ticket to visit both in one day. 1-Day tickets start at $124 per adult for either park.
Universal Studios Florida at a Glance
Universal Studios Florida opened in 1990 as a working movie studio you could walk through. The park has eight lands:
- The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Diagon Alley
- Illumination’s Minion Land (opened 2023)
- DreamWorks Land (opened 2024)
- Springfield, U.S.A. — Home of The Simpsons
- Hollywood
- San Francisco
- New York
- World Expo
Signature rides include:
- Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts
- Despicable Me Minion Mayhem
- Revenge of the Mummy
- The Simpsons Ride
Universal Studios Florida is best known for movie and TV nostalgia. There are character meet-and-greets and entertainment throughout. The new family-focused lands also make it a great choice for families with young kids.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is split between the two parks: Diagon Alley at USF (with the Escape from Gringotts ride) and Hogsmeade at IOA (with Hogwarts Castle, Forbidden Journey, and Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure).
Islands of Adventure at a Glance
Islands of Adventure opened in 1999 with a different concept: themed “islands” that immerse you in distinct fantasy worlds rather than movie backlot streets. The park also has eight lands:
- Port of Entry
- Marvel Super Hero Island
- Toon Lagoon
- Skull Island: Reign of Kong
- Jurassic Park
- The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Hogsmeade
- The Lost Continent
- Seuss Landing
Signature rides include:
- Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure
- Jurassic World VelociCoaster
- The Incredible Hulk Coaster
- Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey
- The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man
Islands of Adventure is best known for having the biggest thrill rides in the resort. The theming is more immersive than Universal Studios Florida. However, the older sections, most notably Marvel, Toon Lagoon, and Skull Island, have started to show their age.
Side-by-Side Ride Comparison
Here’s how the two originals compare against each other and against Epic Universe, which opened in 2025.

Best Park for Thrill-Seekers
Islands of Adventure is the best park for thrill-seekers. If you rank the top ten thrill rides at Universal Orlando (including Epic Universe), Islands of Adventure has four or five of them:
- Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure
- Jurassic World VelociCoaster
- The Incredible Hulk Coaster
- Doctor Doom’s Fearfall
The only true thrill-ride at Universal Studios Florida currently is Revenge of the Mummy. Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit was demolished in August 2025 to make way for Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift (opening 2027).
Best Park for Younger Kids
Universal Studios Florida is the best park for kids under 8. The two recent additions of Minion Land (opened 2023) and DreamWorks Land (opened 2024) have created playgrounds, character meet-and-greets (including Gru’s Minions, Shrek, Kung Fu Panda’s Po, and the Trolls), plus three kid-friendly rides:
- Despicable Me Minion Mayhem
- Villain-Con Minion Blast
- Trolls Trollercoaster
Islands of Adventure has Seuss Landing, with three rides with low or no height requirement for younger kids: Cat in the Hat, One Fish Two Fish, and the Caro-Seuss-el. However, on the whole Universal Studios is much more modern than Islands of Adventure.
Best Park for Shows and Entertainment
Universal Studios Florida has the best scripted entertainment. The shows and entertainment available here include:
- The Bourne Stuntacular: a live-effects stunt show and arguably the best at any Universal park worldwide
- Universal Mega Movie Parade: the resort’s headliner parade, running seasonally
- The DreamWorks Character Zone: meet-and-greets with Shrek, Po, the Trolls, and more
- Meet-and-greets across the park: Minions and Simpsons characters
- Halloween Horror Nights: takes over the park each autumn (Aug 28 to Nov 1 in 2026)
Islands of Adventure has much less scripted entertainment. The Hogwarts Frog Choir and Triwizard Spirit Rally in Hogsmeade are the main draws, along with character walkarounds in Marvel and Toon Lagoon. Poseidon’s Fury retired years ago and hasn’t been replaced.
Universal Studios Florida has more indoor rides and shows than Islands of Adventure. If you’re visiting during hurricane season and a thunderstorm rolls in (they’re daily from June to September), Universal Studios has more ride options that don’t shut down when it rains.
