No visit to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando is complete without a Butterbeer. The frothy, butterscotch-cream signature drink of the Harry Potter films has become one of the most iconic theme park beverages in the world, and Universal Orlando serves it at every Wizarding World location across all three parks.
This guide covers every Butterbeer variant, every venue you can buy it at, the 2026 prices, the food and desserts flavoured with Butterbeer, and the new Butterbeer experiences at Epic Universe’s Ministry of Magic.

What is Butterbeer at Universal Orlando?
Although the fictional Butterbeer in the Harry Potter films and books is described as being mildly alcoholic, the Butterbeer served at Universal Studios is non-alcoholic. This means you do not need ID to order it, and it is safe for children to consume.
Universal has never publicly revealed the exact Butterbeer recipe, although the drink is widely described as a sweet, butterscotch-cream soda with a thick, foamy head that tastes like butterscotch and shortbread. Universal does keep allergen and dietary information on file for staff to share with guests on request.
Butterbeer first arrived at Universal Orlando in 2010 with the opening of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Islands of Adventure. The drink has been at the heart of the Wizarding World experience ever since, and Universal expanded the recipe family with each new Wizarding World area at Diagon Alley (2014) and Ministry of Magic at Epic Universe (2025).

Souvenir Cups and Refills
Universal sells Butterbeer in three different souvenir cup styles: a plastic souvenir cup, a heavy metal souvenir mug, and a standard disposable plastic cup. Souvenir cups come with the Butterbeer already inside, so they are a one-off purchase rather than a refillable cup.
Butterbeer is never part of Universal Orlando’s refillable cup programme. The souvenir Butterbeer mug can be used for discounted soda refills at Coca-Cola Freestyle stations across both parks, but you will pay full price ($9.49) every time you order another Butterbeer.
Vegan and Dairy-Free Butterbeer
Standard Butterbeer is not vegan because it contains dairy. You can find a vegan-friendly, non-dairy Butterbeer at:
- The Leaky Cauldron in Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida
- Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade at Universal Islands of Adventure
- Café L’air de la Sirène in Ministry of Magic at Universal Epic Universe
Ask any quick service team member for the vegan Butterbeer option. The Butterbeer Waffle at Three Broomsticks is also vegan-friendly, which makes it a useful pairing for vegan visitors who want the Butterbeer experience without dairy.
Butterbeer Nutrition Information
Universal has never released the exact Butterbeer recipe, although according to publicly shared nutritional information, a traditional cold Butterbeer contains:
- Approximately 200 calories
- 42g of carbohydrates
- 29g of sugar
- 3.5g of fat
The Frozen and Hot Butterbeer varieties have slightly different nutrition profiles because of changes to the cream and topping ratios. The Hot Butterbeer in particular is noticeably richer.
Butterbeer at Epic Universe Ministry of Magic
Universal Epic Universe opened in May 2025 and includes Ministry of Magic, the third Wizarding World area at Universal Orlando. Ministry of Magic is themed to 1920s wizarding Paris and the Ministry of Magic from the Fantastic Beasts films, which means the Butterbeer experience is themed differently from Diagon Alley or Hogsmeade.
The Butterbeer at Ministry of Magic is referred to by its French name, Bièraubeurre, but it is the same recipe as the Butterbeer at the other Wizarding World areas. Where Ministry of Magic differs is in the food: the Bièraubeurre Crème Brûlée at Café L’air de la Sirène and the Bièraubeurre truffles and macarons at K. Rammelle are exclusive to Epic Universe.
If you want to taste a Butterbeer experience that’s different from Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley, the Bièraubeurre Crème Brûlée at Café L’air de la Sirène is the standout. The brûléed sugar cap and butterscotch custard make it the most dessert-forward Butterbeer item at Universal.
Butterbeer Season 2026
Butterbeer Season is Universal Orlando’s annual spring celebration of the Wizarding World’s signature drink. The 2026 season ran from March 1 to May 31 and marked the 25th anniversary of the first Harry Potter film. The 2026 season was the first to include Epic Universe’s Ministry of Magic, which added the Bièraubeurre Crème Brûlée and confectionery to the menu.
During Butterbeer Season, Universal also adds limited-edition Butterbeer-themed merchandise to Wizarding World stores, including spirit jerseys, T-shirts, and bucket hats. The Butterbeer Cupcake, Butterbeer Cookie Sandwich, Butterbeer Candy Apple, and Butterbeer Shortbread Bar are all seasonal Butterbeer Season treats that may not be available outside the spring window.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Butterbeer at Universal Orlando alcoholic?
No, Butterbeer at every Wizarding World location is non-alcoholic and safe for kids. Universal has never produced a spiked version, and the recipe stays the same across Orlando, Hollywood, Japan, and Epic Universe. We let our son try it on his first trip with no second thoughts.
How much does a Butterbeer cost at Universal Orlando in 2026?
Cold Butterbeer is around $8.99 and frozen Butterbeer is $9.49 at the Wizarding World locations in Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure (verified May 2026). A plastic souvenir mug with drink runs roughly $15.50, and the metal Butterbeer Barrel Mug is about $37.99 before tax. Souvenir mugs are not refillable for Butterbeer, only for discounted soda at the Freestyle stations.
Where can I buy Butterbeer outside the theme parks?
Since May 2025, the expanded Universal Studios Store at CityWalk has its own Butterbeer counter selling cold, frozen, and hot versions without a park ticket. Before that change, Butterbeer was sold only inside the parks. On-site hotels still don’t carry it, so CityWalk is the only ticket-free option.
Is there a dairy-free Butterbeer option?
Yes, a non-dairy cold and frozen Butterbeer is poured at several Wizarding World locations including the Leaky Cauldron in Diagon Alley, the Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade, and the Bieraubeurre cart at Ministry of Magic in Epic Universe. Ask any cast member for the current allergen card, as the list of locations occasionally shifts. The drink itself still contains sugar, so it isn’t suitable for every dietary need.
What Butterbeer flavours are available at Epic Universe?
Ministry of Magic at Epic Universe sells the classic drink (renamed Bieraubeurre in the French-themed Place Cachee) plus exclusive treats not found elsewhere. Cafe L’air De La Sirene serves a Butterbeer crepe and creme brulee, and K. Rammelle carries Butterbeer truffles, macarons, and Butterbeer Caramel Barrels. I tried the creme brulee on my May 2026 visit and it was the standout pick.
When is Butterbeer Season at Universal Orlando?
Butterbeer Season runs from 1 March to 31 May each year at Universal Orlando and Hollywood. During this window, seasonal items like the Butterbeer Waffle, Cupcake, Cookie Sandwich, Candy Apple, and Shortbread Bar appear at Wizarding World locations alongside the regular drink. Items rotate slightly each year, so check menu boards on arrival.
What does Butterbeer taste like?
Butterbeer at Universal Orlando tastes like a sweet, creamy butterscotch soda with a thick, foamy butterscotch topping. The closest comparison is cream soda blended with a shortbread or butterscotch hard candy. The Hot Butterbeer is more like a butterscotch latte without the coffee, and the Frozen Butterbeer is more like a butterscotch slushy.
Can you refill a Butterbeer mug at Universal Orlando?
No. Butterbeer is not part of Universal Orlando’s refillable cup programme. Every Butterbeer is sold as a fresh pour, and you pay full price each time you order another one.
