Refillable Cups at Universal Studios Hollywood: 2026 Prices and How They Work

A Universal Studios Hollywood refillable cup is a Coca-Cola Freestyle souvenir cup with a chip inside that unlocks fountain drinks all day, one refill every 10 minutes.
At $20 before tax against $5 for a regular fountain drink, it pays for itself on the fourth drink. It is the one thing I buy on every visit.

What Are Universal Studios Hollywood Refillable Cups?
Universal Studios Hollywood refillable cups are heavy-duty plastic cups with a lid, a straw and a handle. The design changes with whatever the park is promoting. In September 2026 the standard cup carried the 25 Years of Fast & Furious artwork, with two film cars wrapped around the side.
You can buy one from most stores, restaurants and drinks carts inside the park. Buy it as soon as you arrive, because every drink you pay for before that is money you could have saved.
Two cups bought in a single transaction drop to $18 each, so a couple or a parent and child should always buy together rather than one at a time.
Once the cup is activated you can refill it every 10 minutes at:
- Coca-Cola Freestyle machines in the Upper and Lower Lot
- Restaurant counters
- Drinks stands and food carts
Restaurants and carts pour the basics such as Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite and Fanta. The Freestyle machines are the point of the cup, with more than 100 mixes.
During Halloween Horror Nights season the machines add event-only flavours. On 1 September 2026 the Springfield machine was pushing Screaming Citrus and Gushing Grape Fanta.
How Do the Refillable Cups Work?
Inside every cup is an RFID chip, sealed into the plastic so it cannot be removed without cutting the cup open. It works like this:
- The cashier sits the cup on a reader at the till and the chip is switched on for the day
- At a Freestyle machine you place the cup on the reader pad and the screen unlocks, and at a counter the team member does the same
- The chip locks for 10 minutes before the next pour
That 10-minute lock was still in force on my September 2026 visit.
The cup only works for the person carrying it, so one cup between two people means one of you is always waiting out the 10 minutes. That is what the two-cup price is for.
Reactivating a Refillable Cup for Another Day
If you are back for a second day, or back next year, bring the cup with you. Reactivating it costs $13 before tax per day in 2026, which the menu boards list as an extra day of refills for a Freestyle cup.
Any counter that sells the cups can reactivate one, including the Minion Cafe near the park entrance. It takes under a minute at the till, and the 10-minute refill window starts again straight away.
Unfortunately, the reactivation price has crept up faster than the cup itself, from $12 to $13. It is still $7 cheaper than buying a new cup, and you save yourself carrying home a second one.
Refillable Cups vs Souvenir Sippers
Universal Studios Hollywood sells two very different kinds of cup, and the names get mixed up constantly. The Freestyle refillable cup is the plain one built for unlimited refills. Souvenir sippers are the 3D character cups, and they are priced as merchandise.
Souvenir sippers run from $20 to $35 before tax. The three I priced in September 2026:
- $20 for the collectible Squishee cup in Springfield
- $25 for the Yoshi drink bottle in Super Nintendo World
- $35 for the Jaws sipper at Studio Cafe
A sipper comes with its first fill free. After that, the Yoshi bottle sign lists refills at $1.50 all day at quick-service counters, and there is no chip, so it will not unlock a Freestyle machine. If you only buy one, buy the Freestyle cup and put the sipper money towards a refillable popcorn bucket.
Butterbeer and Other Themed Drinks
The refillable cup does not cover Butterbeer, the Squishee, the Halloween Horror Nights cocktails or any other themed drink. Those come in their own cups and are paid for separately every time.
There are also still no Coca-Cola Freestyle machines inside The Wizarding World of Harry Potter or Super Nintendo World, which I checked again on 2 September 2026. Fill up before you walk into either land, because the nearest machine is back outside on the main path.
The cup is the easiest saving in the park, and it works alongside the popcorn bucket and the other ways to spend less at Universal Studios Hollywood once you are through the gate.
