8 Things to Do at Universal Studios Hollywood if You Don’t Like Rides

Universal Studios Hollywood may be a theme park, but there’s plenty to do here besides rides. From fantastic character meet-and-greets to world-class shows, there’s something for everyone.

1. The World-Famous Studio Tour

The World Famous Studio Tour is the best thing to do at Universal Studios Hollywood – at least in my opinion. This hour-long tour takes you behind the scenes of an actual film studio, home to several movies and TV shows such as:

  • Desperate Housewives
  • The Good Place
  • Bel-Air

During The World-Famous Studio Tour, you’ll see how special effects are created. These special effects include flash floods and even wreckage from a plane crash featured in The War of the Worlds.

I visit Universal Studios Hollywood often and always go on Studio Tour as it’s slightly different every time. However, I’ve still only seen one famous person at the onset: Mario Lopez.

During The World-Famous Studio Tour, you’ll experience two 4D cinema experiences:

  1. Fast & The Furious Supercharged
  2. King Kong 360 3-D

These cinema experiences are very underwhelming but sadly not optional. Thankfully, however, they don’t take up much time.

2. Mini-Games at Super Nintendo World

If you’re a Super Nintendo fan, head to the Super Nintendo World area at the lower lot of Universal Studios. In this immersive area of the theme park, you can buy a Power-Up band and use it to play mini-games.

There are four different mini-games inside Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood.

  1. Goomba Crazy Crank
  2. Piranha Plant Nap Mishap
  3. Thwomp Panel Panic
  4. Koopa Troopa POWer Punch

Once you have obtained a key from each game, you can go onto the final game inside Bowser Jr.’s lair. Each of these mini-games takes between 1 and 2 minutes to play. However, the line for each game can mean the total experience takes over an hour to complete.

3. Shopping, Dining & Entertainment at CityWalk

CityWalk is a free-to-enter entertainment district just outside Universal Studios Hollywood. At CityWalk, you’ll find a range of attractions, stores and restaurants. Some of my favourites include:

  • The Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen
  • Voodoo Donuts
  • Bubba Gump Shrimp
  • Pink’s Hot Dogs

4. Meet Characters

You can meet a whole host of incredible characters at Universal Studios Hollywood. Each character is available for photos and interactions. Some of my favourites include:

  • Spongebob Square Pants
  • Patrick
  • Minions
  • Gru
  • Hello Kitty

Character meet-and-greets are not scheduled. Instead, you’ll find different characters across the theme park throughout the day.

5. Wizarding World of Harry Potter

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is an immersive area within Universal Studios Hollywood. This area of the theme park is designed to replicate Hogsmeade.

There are rides in this area of the theme park, including:

  • Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey
  • Flight of the Hippogriff

However, there are plenty of other things to do inside The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Such as:

  • Live performance from the Frog Choir
  • Live performance from the Triwizard Spirit Rally
  • Casting spells with an interactive wand
  • Drinking Butterbeer

6. WaterWorld

WaterWorld is one of the most beloved live-action shows at Universal Studios Hollywood. This 20-minute performance is a live scene from the hit film of the same name and is packed with action.

There are several showings of WaterWorld throughout the day. As such, if you miss one, you’ll likely still have a chance to catch it again. However, WaterWorld is one of the most popular attractions at Universal Studios Hollywood, so arrive early to get a good seat.

7. Super Silly Fun Land

Super Silly Fun Land is an area designed for little ones who are too small for other rides at Universal Studios. This is where I spent most of my time when I visited Universal Studios Hollywood with my wife and 14-month-old son recently.

Inside Super Silly Fun Land, you’ll find:

  • SplashPad
  • Playground
  • Fairground Games
  • Super Swirly Fun Ride

The Super Swirly Fun Ride has no height requirement; however, children must be able to sit independently. There’s also the Minion Café here, which serves some of the best food inside the theme park.

8. DreamWorks Theatre Featuring Kung Fu Panda

DreamWorks Theatre Featuring Kung Fu Panda is a ten-minute indoor 4D theatre show. As such, there are wind and water effects alongside limited motion and movement.

There is no height requirement for this ride. Therefore, as you might expect, the motion of this ride is minimal.

The DreamWorks Theatre has a capacity of 240 people. This, combined with non-stop showings throughout the day, means you’ll often wait no more than 10 minutes for the attraction.
