Universal Orlando currently covers over 1,500 acres split across three areas:
- Main Resort Area: 725 Acres
- Endless Summer Resort: 64 Acres
- Epic Universe: 750 Acres
These three areas are close in proximity but are not tied together, as demonstrated in the map below.

The History of Universal Land Holdings
The main reason the 1,500 acres that Universal owns are not tied together is how and when the land was bought.
When Universal first launched its Florida venture, it owned 423 acres. This expanded to 840 acres and then stabilised at 725 acres. This is the “Main Resort Area” of Universal Orlando and features:
- Universal Studios Florida
- Islands of Adventure
- CityWalk
- On-site Hotels
- Portofino Bay Hotel
- Hard Rock Hotel
- Royal Pacific Resort
- Sapphire Falls Resort
- Aventura Hotel
- Cabana Bay Beach Resort.
- Volcano Bay
In 1998, Universal purchased 2,000 acres near the Orange County Convention Center. Universal paid $200 million for the land and intended to build a theme park, hotels, and a sports complex.
However, financial difficulties and a change in ownership led to the sale of this 2,000-acre property in 2003 for just $70 million. This turned out to be a mistake because 12 years later, Universal began efforts to buy back the land.
- In 2015, Universal bought back 474 acres for $130 million.
- In 2017, an additional 101 acres were acquired for $27.5 million.
- By 2018, more land was reacquired, though the exact details remain undisclosed.

Frequently Asked Questions
These are the questions I get most often about how big the Universal Orlando Resort is and how it compares to Walt Disney World.
How big is the Universal Orlando Resort?
Roughly 1,549 acres total, across two non-contiguous campuses. The north campus (around 735 acres) holds Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, Volcano Bay, CityWalk, and most hotels, and the south campus (around 750 acres) holds Epic Universe plus the three newest hotels.
How does Universal Orlando compare in size to Walt Disney World?
Disney World is much larger, at roughly 25,000 acres, which makes Universal Orlando about one-sixteenth of Disney’s size. That gap is why Universal feels walkable and Disney needs internal transport between parks. The trade-off is that Universal’s smaller footprint also means less ground to cover at the end of a long day.
How many theme parks does Universal Orlando have?
Three theme parks plus one water park, for four gates total. The theme parks are Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, and Epic Universe (which opened May 22, 2025), and the water park is Volcano Bay. CityWalk is the dining and entertainment district shared between USF and IOA.
How big is Epic Universe?
Approximately 750 acres of land, with the developed park footprint at roughly 110 acres so far. That makes Epic Universe the largest single park at Universal Orlando by built footprint, and the parcel has room for further expansion.
How many hotels are at the Universal Orlando Resort?
Eleven on-site hotels, split across three tiers. The Signature Collection has five (Portofino Bay, Hard Rock, Royal Pacific, Sapphire Falls, and Helios Grand), the Prime Value tier has three (Aventura, Stella Nova, Terra Luna), and the Value tier has three (Cabana Bay, Endless Summer Surfside, Endless Summer Dockside). Helios Grand sits inside Epic Universe with a dedicated walking entrance.
How big is Volcano Bay?
The developed park is around 28 acres, sitting on a larger 53-acre parcel. That makes Volcano Bay smaller than the two dry parks, but its central Krakatau volcano (200 feet tall) is the tallest single structure at the resort.
