The Universal Orlando Resort covers 1,549 acres (627 hectares), nearly triple its 2015 size of 541 acres (219 hectares) after Epic Universe opened in May 2025. This includes:
- 3 Theme Parks: Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, Epic Universe
- Volcano Bay (water park)
- Universal CityWalk: Free to visit entertainment district
- 11 on-site hotels
As well as all of the parking garages, roads, and facility management spaces that guests don’t typically see.

How Much You’ll Actually Walk at Universal Orlando
The size of Universal Orlando is one thing, but what it actually feels like to spend a day at the parks is another. Here’s how much I walked on my May 2026 Universal Orlando press trip according to my Apple Watch:
- 21 May (Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure VIP tour): 16,152 steps, roughly 7.6 miles (12.3 km).
- 22 May (Epic Universe VIP tour): 18,363 steps, roughly 8.7 miles (14 km).
- 23 May (Volcano Bay morning, CityWalk dinner, USF for the Cinematic Celebration in the evening): 18,014 steps, roughly 8.5 miles (13.7 km).
- 24 May (Islands of Adventure morning, hotel afternoon, airport evening): 18,423 steps, roughly 8.7 miles (14 km).
We spent 12 to 14 hours at the parks on all three days (21st to 23rd), so while I walked more at Epic Universe than Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, that’s not necessarily an accurate representation of the theme parks’ size.
I took the shuttle bus from my on-site hotel (Loews Sapphire Falls) directly to Epic Universe. The ride took about 12 minutes. Universal also runs the same shuttle from CityWalk Transportation Hub for guests not staying on-site, with similar travel times.
How to Prepare for Walking Around Universal Orlando
The size of Universal Orlando significantly impacts how you should prepare for your trip. Here are some of the tips I recommend based on multiple visits over more than a decade:
- Wear trainers: You want to choose shoes that you’re comfortable in and that are well worn and broken in.
- Hydrate: The heat and humidity of Florida combined with walking makes staying hydrated essential.
- Factor in Breaks: Both during your itinerary for the day and across your Universal Orlando vacation.
- Don’t overdo it with little kids: Strollers will help but I’d still expect to have shorter park days with babies and toddlers.
- Shade at Epic Universe: The trees aren’t fully grown so shade at Epic Universe is limited. Consider indoor shows for a break midday.

Frequently Asked Questions
These are the questions I get most often about the size of the Universal Orlando Resort:
How big is the Universal Orlando Resort?
Roughly 1,549 acres (627 hectares) total, across two non-contiguous campuses. The north campus (around 735 acres (298 hectares)) holds Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, Volcano Bay, CityWalk, and most hotels, and the south campus (around 750 acres (304 hectares)) holds Epic Universe plus the three newest hotels.
How does Universal Orlando compare in size to Walt Disney World?
Disney World is much larger, at roughly 25,000 acres (about 10,100 hectares), which makes Universal Orlando about one-sixteenth of Disney’s size. That gap is why Universal feels walkable and Disney needs internal transport between parks. Both resorts now have enough theme park acreage to fill a week though, so size shouldn’t be the deciding factor when choosing between them. Days needed, ride preferences, and on-site hotel pricing matter more than total acres.
How many theme parks does Universal Orlando have?
Three theme parks plus one water park, for four gates total. The theme parks are Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, and Epic Universe (which opened May 22, 2025), and the water park is Volcano Bay. CityWalk is the dining and entertainment district shared between USF and IOA.
How big is Epic Universe?
Approximately 750 acres (304 hectares) of land, with the developed park footprint at roughly 110 acres (45 hectares) so far. That makes Epic Universe the largest single park at Universal Orlando by built footprint, and the parcel has room for further expansion.
How many hotels are at the Universal Orlando Resort?
Eleven on-site hotels, split across three tiers. The Signature Collection has five (Portofino Bay, Hard Rock, Royal Pacific, Sapphire Falls, and Helios Grand), the Prime Value tier has three (Aventura, Stella Nova, Terra Luna), and the Value tier has three (Cabana Bay, Endless Summer Surfside, Endless Summer Dockside). Helios Grand sits inside Epic Universe with a dedicated walking entrance.
How big is Volcano Bay?
The developed park is around 28 acres (11 hectares), sitting on a larger 53-acre (21 hectare) parcel. That makes Volcano Bay smaller than the two dry parks, but its central Krakatau volcano (200 feet tall) is the tallest single structure at the resort.
