Jurassic World VelociCoaster is the best ride at Islands of Adventure. The ride reaches 70 mph (113 km/h) and features a massive 155-foot (47-meter) drop.

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit is my favourite ride at Universal Orlando. Unfortunately, however, it is set to close and be demolished in September 2025.

The ride starts with a vertical climb to a height of 167 feet (51 meters), followed by a thrilling drop that reaches speeds of up to 65 mph (105 km/h). The coaster goes upside down and features a steep drop, along with an intense vertical lift.

Each ride vehicle seats one person per row, secured with a lap bar. Once seated, you can choose a song to be played through the sound system embedded in your seat creating a personalised ride experience.

3. The Incredible Hulk Coaster

🎢 Theme Park: Islands of Adventure
😬 Thrill: 5/5

The Incredible Hulk Coaster is a high-speed roller coaster that starts with a launch, taking you from 0 to 40 mph in just 2 seconds. From there, you’ll experience loops, corkscrews, and sharp turns.

Each ride vehicle seats four people in a row and has an over-the-shoulder harness for safety. The ride’s speed, drops, and inversions are ideal for thrill-seekers.

While the ride has been known to cause ‘head bashing,’ recent revisions have improved it. Push your head back as far into the seat as possible during the ride to minimise discomfort.

4. Revenge Of The Mummy

🎢 Theme Park: Universal Studios
😬 Thrill: 4/5

Revenge of the Mummy is one of the most intense rides at Universal Orlando. This high-speed indoor rollercoaster has twists, turns, and sudden drops but does not go upside down.

Set in an ancient Egyptian tomb, you’ll face mummies and other dark forces as you race through the dark on a high-speed track. Each ride vehicle seats four people in a row, secured with a standard over-the-shoulder harness for safety.

5. Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure

🎢 Theme Park: Islands of Adventure
😬 Thrill: 4/5

Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure has one of the longest wait times of any ride at Universal Orlando. This rollercoaster takes you through the Forbidden Forest. As you race through twists and turns, you’ll see magical creatures like dragons and skrewts.

There are two seating options on this ride:

  1. Motorbike
  2. Sidecar

The motorbike seat is definitely more thrilling as it’s more exposed. Both seats have a lap bar for safety.

Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure has some sudden drops. But it doesn’t go upside down or have any inversions. If your kids are a Harry Potter fan, I’d try to encourage them to experience this ride, as it’s fantastic!

6. Jurassic Park River Adventure

🎢 Theme Park: Islands of Adventure
😬 Thrill: 4/5

Jurassic Park River Adventure is a water-based ride in which you will get wet.

The ride has five rows, each holding up to five guests. A lap bar is lowered across the entire row. This means smaller children might have more space between them and the lap bar, especially when riding with larger guests.

The concept of Jurassic Park River Adventure is that you’re going on a journey through calm waters to see the dinosaurs. However, the dinosaurs have escaped, leading to a thrilling chase and a dramatic 85-foot (26-meter) drop as you try to escape.

7. Harry Potter And The Forbidden Journey

🎢 Theme Park: Islands of Adventure
😬 Thrill: 3.5/5

The Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey is inside the iconic Hogwarts Castle. During this ride, you’ll join Harry, Hermione, and Ron, flying on broomsticks and meeting magical creatures.

Each guest sits in an individual seat secured with a harness and lap bar. The ride vehicle swings and tilts, simulating the feeling of flying. It may cause motion sickness for some guests. The ride does not require 3D glasses.

Given the seat format, some people with larger chests have been known to struggle to secure the harness. There is a test seat at the entrance of the ride for you to try before waiting in line.

8. Harry Potter And The Escape From Gringotts

🎢 Theme Park: Universal Studios
😬 Thrill: 3.5/5

Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts is a dark ride inside the famous bank in Diagon Alley. This 3D simulator rollercoaster takes you through the vaults, where you’ll face trolls, dragons, and Voldemort.

Each vehicle seats 12 people with a lap bar for safety. The ride isn’t too intense; it moves relatively slowly and doesn’t go upside down. However, sharp turns, small drops, and motion effects means this ride may cause motion sickness.

Although the height requirement is low, dark scenes and sudden movements may scare younger children. However, for Harry Potter fans, this is an unmissable experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are the questions I see most often about which rides at Universal Orlando are the most intense or scary.

What is the scariest ride at Universal Orlando?

VelociCoaster at Islands of Adventure is the scariest ride overall, with a 70 mph top speed, four inversions, and a near-vertical 80-degree drop. Stardust Racers at Epic Universe runs a very close second since it launches twice and crosses 62 mph with side-by-side racing dual tracks. Both feel genuinely intense, even for experienced coaster riders.

Is Revenge of the Mummy a scary ride?

Revenge of the Mummy is more thrilling than scary, with sudden drops, fire effects, and a launched backward section in total darkness. It uses a lap-bar restraint rather than an over-the-shoulder harness, so the seating feels less locked in than on a typical coaster. We rank it as moderate on the scare scale, suitable for most older kids.

Does Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure go upside down?

No, Hagrid’s has zero inversions despite being one of the most thrilling rides at the resort. It features seven launches, a 65-foot peak, and a vertical free-fall drop track section that briefly takes the ride backwards. That free-fall element is what catches most riders by surprise, since it is not visible from the queue.

Are the new Epic Universe rides scary?

Some of them are. Stardust Racers is the most intense coaster at Epic Universe with a 133-foot lift and dual launches. Monsters Unchained Frankenstein Experiment uses a KUKA robotic-arm vehicle that won the 2025 Golden Ticket Award for Best Dark Ride, with strong jump scares and intense scenes. Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry is a magical robotic-arm ride that Universal rates a 4 out of 5 on its in-park fear scale.

Should you skip rides if you get motion sick?

Yes, several rides are flagged for motion sensitivity, including Forbidden Journey, Mario Kart Bowser’s Challenge, Mine-Cart Madness, Transformers, and The Simpsons Ride. Forbidden Journey is the most commonly reported trigger because the KUKA arm tilts riders alongside fast-cut screens. Sitting in a middle seat and pre-medicating with ginger or anti-nausea tablets can help.
