In 2026 Labor Day falls on Monday, September 7th. The long weekend (Friday September 5 to Monday September 7) is one of the surprisingly better times to visit Universal Orlando. The schools are starting back after the summer and the increased likelihood of tropical storms put out-of-state visitors stay home.
Everything at Universal Orlando opens and operates as normal on Labor Day. However, there is one major caveat to consider. Halloween Horror Nights 2026 opens on Friday, August 28, which makes Labor Day weekend the second weekend of HHN.
Universal Studios Florida closes at 5pm on HHN nights, a separately-ticketed event. This increases the number of adult visitors across the resort and will alter a weekend itinerary.
Universal Orlando Labor Day Crowds, Day by Day
Labor Day weekend is one of the lighter three-day weekends at Universal Orlando when compared to other major US holidays like Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day, or Christmas. There are two main reasons for this:
- Schools are resuming after the summer.
- Peak Florida hurricane season

To put the lighter crowd claim in real numbers, here are the three-year average wait times (2023, 2024, 2025) for the six most popular rides at Universal Studios Florida on Labor Day Monday:
| Ride | Average Wait | Peak Wait |
|---|---|---|
| Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts | 40 min | 85 min |
| Revenge of the Mummy | 30 min | 65 min |
| E.T. Adventure | 29 min | 45 min |
| Despicable Me Minion Mayhem | 29 min | 50 min |
| Hogwarts Express (King’s Cross Station) | 28 min | 55 min |
| The Simpsons Ride | 25 min | 55 min |
Park-wide average across all attractions sits around 25 minutes on Labor Day Monday, which is comparable to a mid-tier crowd day rather than a peak summer day. For reference, peak Christmas week typically runs 40-60 minutes for the same rides.

Over the weekend in 2026 here’s what you can expect:
- Friday September 5: Moderate crowds during the day. HHN starts at 6:30pm so Universal Studios Florida closes at 5pm. Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe will absorb some of the guests who have park-to-park tickets in the early afternoon.
- Saturday September 6: The busiest day of the weekend. Most out-of-state visitors arrive Friday night and hit the parks Saturday morning. Again Universal Studios Florida closes at 5pm for HHN.
- Sunday September 6: Similar crowds to Saturday. Again Universal Studios Florida closes at 5pm for HHN.
- Monday September 7 (Labor Day): Noticeably quieter as out-of-state visitors travel home in the morning. HHN does not take place on a Monday so Universal Studios Florida will go back to it’s standard closing time.

Tuesday September 8 and Wednesday September 9 will be very quiet. Out-of-state visitors have travelled back home and locals are back at school. If you’re able to visit on those days then I suggest using them to visit the new theme park Epic Universe.
Halloween Horror Nights and Labor Day Weekend
Halloween Horror Nights 2026 opens on Friday, August 28, the earliest start in the event’s 35-year history. That means Labor Day weekend is HHN weekend number two, with the event running every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night through November 1. This means:
- USF closes at 5pm on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of Labor Day weekend (and most weeknights through October). Day-ticket guests must exit by 5pm. HHN guests are admitted from 6:30pm onwards with separate ticketing.
- The Cinematic Celebration evening show is suspended at USF during HHN season.
- USF queues are noticeably shorter from 3pm as the park clears out for HHN setup. This is the best time to go on the parks most popular rides.
- HHN tickets are sold separately and are NOT included with day park tickets, multi-day Park-to-Park tickets, or Annual Pass.

If you’re not doing HHN, plan Labor Day weekend around Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe for full-day visits, with USF used as a morning park. If you are doing HHN, build at least one full day at Epic Universe into the trip because Epic Universe runs late evening hours independent of HHN.
Frequently Asked Questions
These are the most common questions I see about visiting Universal Orlando over Labor Day weekend.
Is Universal Orlando busy on Labor Day weekend?
No, Labor Day weekend is one of the slowest three-day weekends of the year at Universal Orlando. Most US schools are back in session by Labor Day, Atlantic hurricane season is peaking, and Orlando heat and humidity are at their worst, so crowds drop noticeably from the summer peak. Crowd calendars typically rate Labor Day weekend 3 to 5 out of 10.
Is Universal Orlando open on Labor Day?
Yes. All three theme parks, Volcano Bay, CityWalk, and the eleven on-site hotels operate as normal on Labor Day (Monday, September 7, 2026). There is no special Labor Day theming, parade, or fireworks event at the resort.
Does Halloween Horror Nights overlap Labor Day weekend?
Yes. HHN 2026 starts August 28, which means Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of Labor Day weekend (September 4 through 6) are all HHN event nights. Universal Studios Florida closes at 5pm to non-HHN guests on those days, so I shift our USF time to the morning on event nights.
Should I buy Express Pass for Universal Orlando on Labor Day?
Probably not, unless you only have one day. Labor Day weekend crowds are low enough that rope drop plus a smart touring order usually beats the Express Pass price, especially at USF and IOA. I’d reserve Express Pass spend for Epic Universe, where waits stay elevated even on lower-crowd days.
Is the weather bad at Universal Orlando on Labor Day?
Hot and humid, with daily thunderstorm risk. Early September averages a high of 90 F (32 C) with afternoon thunderstorms that close outdoor rides and Volcano Bay for lightning. I plan morning park time, an indoor lunch break, and pool or hotel time during the worst of the afternoon heat.
