Bringing Outside Food & Drink to Universal Orlando

You are permitted to bring food and drink into Universal Orlando. However, there are some rules you should know first:
- You can bring up to two litres of bottled water per guest
- Alcohol is not permitted
- Glass jars are permitted for medical items and baby food
- Soft-sided coolers are permitted up to 8.5″ x 6″ x 6″
Having visited Universal Orlando more than ten times over the past decade, both with and without children, I understand first-hand the practicalities of bringing food and drink with you to the park.

Outside Food Policy
Universal Orlando allows outside food and drink into all four parks:
- Universal Studios Florida
- Islands of Adventure
- Epic Universe
- Volcano Bay
This is done under a single resort-wide policy that has not changed for several years and includes:
- Bottled water: up to 2 litres per guest.
- Snacks: crisps, cereal bars, biscuits, sweets.
- Food for medical purposes or special dietary needs: No doctor’s note required.
- Baby food and baby formula: Glass baby food jars are permitted despite the general glass ban.
- One soft-sided cooler per guest: maximum 8.5″ wide x 6″ high x 6″ deep
- Water bottles: Refill for free at any counter-service kiosk.
Universal’s Prohibited Items list is clear on the following:
- Alcohol: of any kind, including drinks containing alcohol. This is strictly enforced.
- Glass containers, except baby food jars.
- Hard-sided coolers: or any cooler exceeding 8.5″ x 6″ x 6″.
- Food requiring heating or refrigeration: Universal does not have microwaves, fridges, or freezers.
- “Picnic lunches” (Universal’s own term for large multi-container spreads).
- Metal utensils and knives: These are confiscated as weapons. Use plastic cutlery instead.
- Wheeled suitcases and bags: folding chairs, drones, hoverboards, marijuana, and weapons.
You can fill your water bottle up with water at any Coca-Cola Freestyle station or any restaurant inside Universal Orlando.
Best Food and Drink to Pack
Given Florida’s heat and humidity, I’d suggest packing dry snacks over sandwiches and packed lunches that could potentially spoil and take up a lot of space. Some of my favourite items include:
- Cereal and granola bars
- Crisps and pretzels
- Trail mix and dried fruit
- Sweets and biscuits
- Baby food and formula
- Empty reusable water bottles
- Small juice boxes
- Powdered drink mixes (like electrolyte sachets)
Universal Orlando does not have any designated picnic areas inside its parks but there are plenty of seating options available around the parks suitable for eating at.
Travelling from the UK, I’ve never actually brought a soft-sided cooler with us. Honestly, for our family, the hassle of packing anything beyond snacks isn’t worth it. The food inside the parks is expensive, but it’s part of the experience.
If you want to save, eat at quick-service counters instead of the sit-down CityWalk restaurants, or order delivery via DoorDash, Uber Eats, or Instacart back to your hotel room.

Will Universal security check my bag for food?
Yes. Every bag is X-rayed at park entry. Metal detectors are also used at Epic Universe. Prohibited items are removed but sealed snacks and small coolers pass through fine.
Are there picnic areas at Universal Orlando?
No. Universal Orlando has no designated picnic areas inside its four parks. Practical alternatives include benches around the parks, CityWalk seating, the parking hub, or your on-site hotel room.
Can you bring food into on-site hotels at Universal Orlando?
Yes. All nine on-site hotels permit outside food and drink in your room. Third-party delivery (DoorDash, Uber Eats, Instacart) is standard. Pool areas prohibit glass and outside alcohol.
