How to Get From Anaheim to Universal Studios Hollywood

There are three ways to travel the 35-mile distance from Anaheim to Universal Studios Hollywood:

  1. Rideshare (Uber / Lyft)
  2. Drive
  3. Public Transport

I’m a Disney fan and a Universal Hollywood annual pass holder. As such, I’ve travelled from Anaheim to Universal several times over the past decade.

Therefore, I’m confident when I say the best way to travel from Anaheim to Universal Studios Hollywood is using Uber or Lyft.

Driving in Los Angeles is a hassle, not to mention expensive. So unless you plan to explore more of the region, I do not recommend this. Meanwhile, public transport, albeit a little cheaper, requires several changes.

In this article, I’ll break down each transport method in detail. Helping you to make an informed decision as to which method is best for you.

Rideshare (Uber / Lyft)

⏱️ Time: 1 Hour
💵 Cost: $55 (each way)

The best way to travel from Anaheim to Universal Studios Hollywood is using Uber or Lyft. There are several reasons why this is the case:

  1. The journey is direct
  2. You can leave whenever you want
  3. You can choose the size of your vehicle

Both Uber and Lyft can drop off and pick up at Universal Studios Hollywood very quickly. Meanwhile, an Uber or Lyft from Anaheim to Universal Studios Hollywood costs around $55.

This $55 estimate is based on a one-way journey with four passengers in a standard vehicle. If you need an XL vehicle suitable for up to seven passengers, the cost will be closer to $85 one-way.

Uber and Lyft offer the same service, albeit under a different name. In fact, many people who drive for Uber also drive for Lyft.

However, while the services are the same, you may notice a difference in cost. That’s because Uber and Lyft work on a dynamic pricing model. A dynamic pricing model sees prices fluctuate based on driver and customer ratios.

For this reason, I recommend downloading and setting up both Uber and Lyft in advance. Then, at the time of travel, compare the price between the two services and choose the cheapest.

Hire Car

⏱️ Time: 1 Hour
💵 Cost: $30 (based on General Parking only)
💻 Book Hire Car: Discover Cars

If you have travelled to LA by car or hired a car for your vacation, you can drive from Anaheim to Universal. The 35-mile journey takes roughly an hour. However, LA traffic is notoriously terrible, so be sure to allow for extra time.

Driving from Anaheim to Universal Studios Hollywood costs around $50; this includes:

  1. Gas money
  2. Tolls
  3. Parking your car at Universal Studios Hollywood

The most expensive factor when driving to Universal Studios Hollywood is parking. The cheapest parking option at the theme park is currently General Parking at $30. However, this cost can be as high as $70 if you want to upgrade to Front Gate Parking.

I advise against specifically hiring a car to travel from Anaheim to Universal Studios Hollywood. A round trip for a family of four in an Uber costs around $110.

So, you’d need a rental car for less than $60 to cover parking, gas, and tolls. Not to mention the hassle of picking up and dropping off the vehicle and the stressful LA traffic.

Instead, I would only recommend driving from Anaheim to Universal Studios Hollywood if you already have a car available.

Public Transport

⏱️ Time: 2 Hours
💵 Cost: $8
💻 Buy Bus Tickets: Omio

You can travel between Anaheim and Universal Hollywood on public transport. However, I wouldn’t recommend it, even if you travel solo.

That’s because travelling from Anaheim to Universal on public transport takes 2 to 3 hours. That’s twice, if not three times, longer than by car. You’ll also need to change several times.

You’ll need to walk or cycle to Fullerton to begin your journey. Here, you can take the Amtrak Pacific Surfer 777 route to Union Station in Los Angeles. This journey takes around 50 minutes, and tickets can be bought online in advance.

From Union Station, you’ll need to take the red 802 Metro Line train 30 minutes to Universal City Station. Once you arrive at Universal City Station, you’ll want to cross the bridge and walk to the bottom of the hill.

From here, you can take the free shuttle from the bus stop to the entrance of Universal or walk up the hill.

If you want to take public transport in LA, consider staying in a hotel near Disneyland and Universal instead. That way, it’s just a short commute to each theme park.
